The Township of Spencer is situated in the southwestern corner of Marathon County, Wisconsin. It is bordered on the north by Eau Pleine Road, East by Lincoln Avenue, South by Lincoln Spencer Road, and west by the east side of Fairhaven Avenue. It borders Clark County on the west and Wood County on the south. The Township is served by the Spencer Volunteer Fire Department.
The Town is in District 27 for the Marathon County Board of Supervisors. The township’s location designation is T26N – R2E, which is almost six miles square, except for the Village of Spencer taking out a section on the northeast quadrant. State Highway 13 traverses the town, progressing northwest from Marshfield and then north through the Village of Spencer. County Highways F and V run north and south through the Town, and County Highway C runs east and west
Townships are established with 36 sections (640 acres per section). Sections are numbered starting from the northeast corner and progressing to the west and then back to the east. Sections 5, 6, 7, and 8 surround the Village of Spencer. On the western part of the township is the McMillan Marsh covering parts of Sections 10, 13, 14, 15, and 34. See more information under McMillan Marsh. Since 1970, the Town has grown rapidly due to the subdivisions. There are ten subdivisions within the township.

The Township has one part-time highway department employee. The town board comprises a Chairman, 2 Supervisors, a Clerk, and a Treasurer. The voters select the Board and serve two-year terms. The Town of Spencer has an assessed valuation of $188,523,100 as of 2023.
